Although Martin did not come directly from York there no doubt the loan spell he had there in January 1999 persuaded Alan Little to buy him for the Blues in September 1999.
Martin started as a trainee with Villa, but was limited to two full appearances and a loan spell at Hull before Stoke signed him. He made almost 120 appearances for them, many as a substitute, before moving to Peterborough, but an injury early in the 1998/99 season saw him lose his place + the loan spell at York was followed by a move to Darlington to partner Marco Gabbiadini. Somewhat surprisingly, as he had struck up a good partnership with Marco, he was allowed to join Southend, briefly on loan, then purchased.
His partnership with Neil Tolson proved very fruitful initially with 8 goals, five from Martin, in their first 6 matches together, but that was followed by only one in the next six. Southend fans as always hope for the best.
